Another Basquiat-inspired collage. This time featuring the words "Hollywood Africans", taken from J.M. Basquiat‘s painting of the same name. Of this piece, the Whitney Museum of Art writes
Hollywood Africans is one of a series of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s paintings that feature images and texts relating to stereotypes of African Americans in the entertainment industry. It was painted while Basquiat was on an extended visit to Los Angeles, California, in 1983.
My own 'Hollywood Africans" rendition has little if nothing to do with Basquait´s original themes, if anything it speaks of voyeurism and materialism. In this collage, I again utilized jewellry from Vesto Pazzo advertisements, as well as Neiromai. The young woman with the camera is a stock photography image.
