From the ages of 13, 14, 15, I spent most Saturday afternoons reading the plays of Aurthur Miller, and when his epic memoir “Timebends” was released I immediately checked it out from the library. Though at a whopping near 700 pages, I cannot say I finished it.
I was fascinated by the marriage of Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe. They appeared to be complete opposites. I liked that. I remember reading a headline from a 1956 paper in the library one afternoon. It was the summer of my 14th birthday. The headline of the article on the two read “Egghead Weds Hourglass.”
Miller was erudite. He was analytical, reflective, complex. He was also passionate. I like the way he tells the story of Monroe both in his autobiography and in interviews. I appreciate the lens he saw her through.
I like his dark draw to her.
I am fond of darkness.
